In Onitsha, Anambra State, two people who were allegedly armed robbers were burned to death on Wednesday.
The two men were struggling and writhing in agony as the fire burned them, and in a video that went viral, onlookers could be seen screaming as some people continued to pour fuel on them.
While fuel was being poured on the men, some bystanders at the scene were seen sobbing, but others used heavy sticks to hit the suspected thieves, preventing them from fleeing the fire.
The Anambra Police Command responded to the events by denouncing the jungle justice system and characterizing the suspects as infamous armed robbers.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, has condemned the act and reiterated his call for members of the public to always take criminal offenders to the nearest Police Station for necessary policing actions, particularly the conduct of appropriate investigations,” stated Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Tochukwu Ikenga.
“Thus, a comprehensive investigation into the incident has been ordered by the CP.”
The two male suspects, who were later simply identified as Omaume and Monday, are members of a notorious armed robbery gang led by one Ikanda, another infamous robber who is currently being remanded in the Onitsha Correctional Service Custodial Center, he continued.
